When Alphabet spin-off Loon came to Schubeler to inquire about how to control their stratospheric balloons with electric fans, Schubeler advised that the requested low air volume flow would lead to a stall of a classic fan when pressurizing the ballonet. Instead, Schubeler designed a compressor that delivered high pressure at low volume flow in the stratosphere. Loon’s mission goal of deploying low cost internet in remote areas via a stratospheric balloon network did not commercially succeed but over a 6-year period, hundreds of balloons operated by Schubeler compressors were in service.

Compressors designed for stratospheric balloon manufacturers

Schubeler now offers its unrivaled design and manufacturing expertise in the field of compressors to stratospheric balloon manufacturers to help them develop and build vehicles designed to operate efficiently in unimaginably harsh conditions. Loon successfully released hundreds of stratospheric balloons manned by Schubeler compressors which fulfilled their mission of bringing wireless coverage to certain South American and African regions. Although Loon’s business model did not prevail, the technology advancements it achieved will carry over to other projects.
