Students rely on Schubeler electric fans for design competition

In the race for the Formula Student trophy, Schubeler Technologies is supporting students from the University of Stuttgart. Formula Student is an international design competition for students in which teams from around the world design a single-seat formula vehicle and produce a prototype ready to drive. For the second year in a row, Schubeler Technologies is sponsoring the ambitious project of the Stuttgart students and supplying the drive for the construction of one of the best Formula Student racing cars.

“Supporting such innovative projects is very close to our hearts,” emphasizes Daniel Schubeler, Managing Director of Schubeler Technologies GmbH. “For us, this is an important contribution to investing in the future. We see this as a great opportunity to drive groundbreaking developments forward, when young talent is motivated to put their creative ideas into practice.”

In the last racing season, the Stuttgart team used HDS impellers from Schubeler Technologies for separately installed, replaceable engines. Specifically, the impeller used was the Schubeler model DS-30-AXI HDS (69 mm) with HET 2W20. The HDS fan is a quality product designed for durability. The lightweight and highly shortened rotor assembly provides efficient operation with blades that are made of high-temperature, fiber-reinforced polymer. Strength is provided by the carbon shroud.

The Schubeler impellers were used for active blowing of the rear diffuser. “As a result, we achieved a drive increase of almost 15% even at standstill,” explains Julian Müller, a student and member of the Aerodynamics F0711-16 Racing team. He studies vehicle and engine technology at the University of Stuttgart and is responsible for the design, simulation and production of all aerodynamic components on the racing vehicle. “There have never been any problems in terms of control and failure. Since this system works so well, we would like to install impellers from Schubeler again in the new season.” In order to start the 2022 season with even more power, it is planned to use a larger model.

In addition to the University of Stuttgart, Schubeler also supports the ETH in Zurich in similar activities. Here, concepts for the aircraft of tomorrow are being tested. “From each of these projects, we draw insights for optimizing our own development and receive inspiration for new products. Therefore, we will continue to be active in this field in the future,” Daniel Schubeler makes clear.
